Free music (completely legal!)

I’ve been following the blog Yellow Stereo, which links to some pretty awesome music – and most recently I saw a couple of links for downloads offered by interesting bands:

Bedroom Eyes, a Swedish one-man-combo, offers both of his EPs
The Format, an Arizona pop rock band, is celebrating the first anniversary of their album ‘Dog Problems’ by giving it away for free (until July 16)

Also, Fingertips is a blog specialising on legal mp3s.

Music rec: Mika

My brother, not usually a music geek, introduced me to a fun new British artist today: Mika, apparently the latest big thing in pop. He’s being compared to Scissor Sisters, and the two certainly share a sense of humour and love of fun. Also, at times he sounds like Queen’s Freddie Mercury, which is A Very Good Thing, in my book. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve only listened to his first album, Life in Cartoon Motion, once so far, but my preliminary favorite is ‘Ring Ring’: www.sendspace.com/file/1mn9u1 (mp3, 3.3mb)

Photo time!

You can find the photos from my recent trip to Lisbon with Sibylle in my travel log. I definitely can recommend visiting this charming city!

Also, Sibylle and I gave Taptim tickets for Swiss band Plรƒยผsch for her birthday. The concert was lots of fun, as they sure know how to rock a crowd, a bit surprisingly so for a somewhat cutesy dialect pop band… Surf the photos (mostly various combinations of the three of us) using the ‘<-more' link on the right. I filmed a 30 seconds clip of one of my favorite songs, 'Heimweh', which will forever be linked in my mind with being stranded in a tiny train station in Japan... Rightclicksave, please (7mb, avi)!

However, I wish I had filmed the leadsinger’s lewd and hilarious impression of Shaggy in a reggae interlude during a love song… I’ll never be able to look at a teddybear (the name of the song) the same again! *g*

An accident and some music

Cycling back from work on Nov 4, I was hit by a car door – I was very lucky and my only real injury was a mild concussion, but it sure wasn’t fun. By now I’m almost back to normal, though, so it’s all good. And I even made it to RingCon with Mรƒยคrrie, despite it all! (Photos of that will follow at some point.)

Anyway, my main reason for posting is that I just heard a song by Sandi Thom and really liked it – so much so that I want you to listen to her yourself:

Gampel mix

I made a mix for Sibylle to commemorate the awesome time we had at the Open-Air Gampel last weekend – and because there’s some good stuff on it, I thought I’d share it here as well. All mp3s hosted on YSI.

Good Memories - Gampel 2006 mix

1. Where Is My Mind – Nada Surf
2. Perfekte Welle – Juli
3. Dance – Danko Jones
4. Butterflies & Hurricanes – Muse
5. Take Off Your Clothes – Morningwood
6. Hey Ya! – The Bosshoss
7. 9 to 5 – Millencolin
8. Sunshine – Patrice
9. If I Leave You – Mando Diao
10. Do You Want To – Franz Ferdinand
11. Ludmilla – Patent Ochsner
12. A Favor House Atlantic – Coheed and Cambria
13. Too Good for Good – Dada (Ante Portas)
14. Piove – Jovanotti

We actually didn’t see the first four acts, because we only went for Saturday/Sunday, but I already had the songs, so I cheated and added them. ๐Ÿ™‚

Plus, a bonus track, because I’ve been watching So You Think You Can Dance (a dance talent show from the US) and have this song stuck in my head: Suddenly I See – KT Tunstall

My life is still on hold

I’ve turned in my thesis, which is quite exciting, but now it’s all about the exams in January (written) and February (oral), for which I have to read and study a shitload of books in my three subjects, about three topics each.

More fun is this Finnish song my brother sent me: Loituma – Leva’s Polka (mp3 on YSI).

It’s totally addictive – and there’s a video to go with it, which you can find here. Seriously, you’ll be listening to it non-stop! ๐Ÿ™‚

Stormy music

Because storm Xandra is passing over Switzerland right now (luckily we’re quite protected so we haven’t felt it too much so far) I thought I’d share my favorite track from the soundtrack to the beautiful La Marche de l’empereur by the young French singer Emilie Simon. Such an energetic piece of music – especially if you picture the howling winds of the Antarctic… And, as a bonus, the one French song of hers I have.

Links hosted on YSI, so they’re good for either 25 downloads or one week, whatever comes first.

Wedding waltz

Sick at home right now, but trying not to let it get me down, as I’m already feeling decidedly better than yesterday. So, on to the topic of this post: My love for the Gilmore girls is common knowledge by now, I’m sure – what I’ve never mentioned before is how much I always enjoy the soundtrack. Just my taste, and it’s led me to discover a number of really great musicians, like Sam Phillips, whose songs and music are in every episode.

Also, I have found the song I want to dance to at my wedding one day. ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously, it’s perfect – it’s used when Luke’s sister gets married, and Luke and Lorelai dance together for the first time.

Sam Phillips – Reflecting Light
Now that I’ve worn out, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon’s never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

I wrote the pain down
Got off and looked up
Looked into your eyes
The lost open windows
All around
My dark heart lit up the skies

And now that I’ve worn, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moon’s never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

Give up the ground
Under your feet
Hold on to nothing for good
Turn and run at the mean times
Chasing you
Stand alone and misunderstood

And now that I’ve worn, I’ve worn out the world
I’m on my knees in fascination
Looking through the night
And the moons never seen me before
But I’m reflecting light

You can download the song from Sam Phillip’s website.
