Songs of 2008

With all the traveling I’ve been doing there are more songs that I remember listening to again and again than normal, even considering that I already made a mix for my time in New Zealand.

As always all picks are songs I’ve added to my library this year, so no long-time favorites or re-discoveries. Also, please note how I restrained myself when it came to bandom bands, most particularly Fall Out Boy… *g*

Alphabetically sorted because I cannot possibly rank them.

The Academy Is… – About a Girl:
Album leaked just before I saw them live in Perth. Instant singalong.

Amanda Palmer – Oasis:
Dresden Dolls singer, offers free downloads of her album on her website.

Anika Moa – Dreams in My Head:
Kiwi singer. Prettypretty singer-songwritery music.

Au Revoir Simone – Sad Song (Pacific Remix):
Love the clappy bits. Not sad at all despite the title.

Ben Folds & Regina Spektor – You Don’t Know Me:
Awesome duet, I love this to pieces.

Boy Eats Drum Machine – Planets + Stars:
Interesting mix of hip hop rhythms and electronica.

The Boy Least Likely To – I Box Up All the Butterflies:
Happy twee with rather creepy lyrics, reminds me of the 60s for some reason.

The Cardigans – For the Boys:
Totally irresistible – thanks for hooking me on it, Märrie!

The Cat Empire – Hello (Edit):
Fun Aussie band mixing a variety of styles. You’ll love them if you like Gogol Bordello.

Charlotte Sometimes – Waves and the Both of Us:
So, Pete Wentz recced her, but don’t let that stop you – it’s a lovely soft song.

Cobra Starship – I Kissed a Boy:
I’ve listened to this approximately a million times and linked it a couple of times here, too. Catchy like the original with none of the tacky questionable lyrics.

eMDee – Gheeta:
Didge n’Drum. Heard them at the Sunset Market in Darwin, had to have the CD.

Empires – Valmont:
Boys in bands, the best way possible.

Fall Out Boy – 27:
This is totally my song for this year – after all, I’m still 27 for another 6 days…

Glen Hansard & Marketa Iglóva – Falling Slowly:
I fell in love with the movie, and the song totally deserved the Oscar it got. One of the prettiest love songs ever.

Hellogoodbye – If You Wanna… I Might:
Headbopping all the way. Such a cute song!

The Hush Sound – Love You Much Better:
Love the Hushies and this is one of my favorites from the latest CD.

Ingrid Michaelson – The Way I Am:
Discovered her when she opened for Jason (see below *g*). Singer-songwriter, rather cute.

Jason Mraz – I’m Yours (Live at Montalvo Winery, Saratoga California 2006):
One of my all-time favorite songs EVER, no doubt about it.

The Killers – Joy Ride:
From their new album, I really like this one. Perfect driving song, I’d say if I drove. 🙂

Kimya Dawson – Loose Lips:
I had to pick a song from ‘Juno’ – that whole soundtrack was the soundtrack for my life for a couple of months… This song feels like a lovesong for bloggers.

Kristeenyoung (feat. Patrick Stump) – That’s What It Takes, Dear:
Downloaded because of Patrick, obviously, but it sounds like a cross between Kate Bush and Tori Amos, duetting with Peter Gabriel, so I actually really really love it. 🙂

Kristin Andreassen – Crayola Doesn’t Make A Color For Your Eyes:
Absolutely adorable, can’t help but sing along. Again with the clapping.

Lily Allen – Everyone’s At It:
Rhythm that has me swaying.

Lykke Li – Little Bit:
Twee’s never been so twee.

The Matches – Papercut Skin:
Another discovery through bandom.

MC Lars – iGeneration:
Meta song about the internet generation. Electronic hip hop.

Metro Station – Wish We Were Older:
Lala dance pop of the very enjoyable kind.

Mindless Self Indulgence – Revenge:
Much to my surprise ‘If’ was one of the albums I listened to the most this year, as it’s somewhat screamier than my usual fare. Makes me want to jump and dance.

Mint Royale – Singin’ in the Rain (FuzzyGroove Mix):
Courtesy of SYTYCD Australia.

Mirah – The Garden:
Very sexy with the thumping beat.

Missy Higgins – Peachy:
Lovely pop song, very catchy hook.

Motion City Soundtrack – Lgfuad:
More boys in bands, teenage angst galore.

My Chemical Romance – You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison:
I listened to ‘The Black Parade’ a lot this year, but I’d already had it. It never fails to surprise me that this is the kind of music I like now. *g*

Of Montreal – When A Man Is In Love With A Man:
Oh, come on, a song with that title? Every slash girl’s theme song!

Opshop – Maybe:
My favorite kiwi band. This is a lovely soft song that takes off with a great hook, like most their stuff.

Paolo Nutini – These Streets:
Somewhat ironically (because it’s a song about missing familiar things) I listened to this quite a bit while traveling around New Zealand.

Patrick Wolf – Peter Pan:
Re-discovered Patrick Wolf this year, bought this from the title alone. Simple tune.

Pelle Carlberg – I Love You, Imbecile:
A rather adorable love song. Also one of my PxP theme songs. 🙂

Poets of the Fall – Save Me:
One of those driving angst bombs. Perfect for songvids, imo.

Sara Bareilles – Love Song:
Catchy girl pop.

Scouting for Girls – She’s So Lovely:
Heard this in Australia, had to have it. Fun pop.

The Shell – Journeys of a Thousand Miles:
Swiss band that opened for The Bosshoss the other week. NOT country-rock, a bit harder.

Sigur Ros – Gobbledigook:
Unusually upbeat for this band, I like it a lot.

Snow Patrol – The Golden Floor
New CD from one of my favorite bands. Good fare, as always.

The Sounds – Hope You’re Happy Now:
Another song that has me bopping my head and singing along. Very catchy chorus.

Stars – My Favourite Book:
One of my favorite love songs ever.

Tullycraft – Twee:
A twee song about twee!

Vampire Weekend – A-Punk:
I dare you not to bop along to this.

Yael Naïm – New Soul:
That song from the iPod commercial.
