This is why I’ll never be ashamed of taking anti-depressants

Life has been throwing all sorts of shit at me recently (family, health, job, flat), and two weeks ago I seriously had no idea how I was going to survive the next weeks. All of these things are still there (although I’m happy to report the flathunt has been going well), but after starting back on my meds the future is daunting but I am confident that I’ll master it.

Yes, I was happy to be off the meds, to be able to cope with two winters in a row with only the help of St. John’s Wort. But after spending several weeks sliding steadily downwards, *this* close to reaching breaking point, doing acupuncture and going back on anti-depressants has pulled me back to the surface. I am still tired and struggling (and still dizzy at times, but only for short periods, not whole days anymore) but I can also breathe and see the sun again. So to the people that still think that mental illness is “only in your head” and requires nothing more than “pulling yourself together” to overcome it: I kindly ask you to FUCK OFF. I don’t need you in my life.

As always, though, the biggest thanks to my friends and family for sticking with me. Seriously. I know it’s not always easy. And happy Fourth of July to everyone in the States! 🙂

The long weekend’s almost over

I’ve been resting all day (it’s a public holiday here in Switzerland), something I seriously needed, but I’m still not very keen on going back to work tomorrow. Ah well, I’ll survive – and on Wednesday I have the Rejects show to look forward to, so that’s awesome!

Anyways, I finally uploaded last week’s photos. After a horriblehorriblenogood day on Wednesday (including severe anxiety and crying in the bathroom at work), on Thursday my American friend Milo and I went to see Snow Patrol in Winterthur. I’ve been wanting to see them for years – I love their music so much, although in a completely non-fangirlish fashion. In any case, the show was AMAZING – the ice stadium it was in was half-empty until the second opener, so we were in second row, next to a couple of nice girls that we got chatting to. I might go see Jamie Cullum with one of them in July, although his show is seriously expensive.

So here are the pics I took on Flickr. Gary Lightbody makes a great frontman, seriously, and I got a bit of a thrill when he told us that Richard Colburn of Belle & Sebastian was on percussion… 🙂

And then, after the only week in May that I worked 5 days and a second acupuncture session (which again instantly made me feel better, but the holistic doctor also told me that I had acidosis, i.e. the pH factor of my blood is too low and my red blood cells stick together) Milo and I took a daytrip to Lugano in the beautiful Italian-speaking southern part of Switzerland. I’d only changed trains there a couple of times, but the town was just as pretty as I’d expected, with a distinct Italian feel despite the chilly wind, including yummy food and gelati. My photos of that day start here.

Last but not least I spent yesterday afternoon catching up with my parents. They’d been in Hamburg for a conference and to meet some old friends (we lived in the area from when I was 1 1/2 until I was 7, and my dad went to seminary there), so that was good. Also, everything around their house out in the country is in full bloom now – it’s been lovely seeing it change with the seasons ever since I came back to Switzerland. So because I’d taken my camera to show them the pictures from Lugano I managed a few rather pretty shots, starting here.

What had me all riled up yesterday

After enjoying church and a nice Easter meal with my parents, I came back online to find that Amazon.com had removed sales rankings from many LGBT-themed books, making it impossible to find them with a normal Amazon search. An automated response to complaints stated that those books had been removed because of “adult content” – however, not only did many sexually explicit heterosexual books keep their ranking, but completely non-explicit books like lesbian parenting guides, LGBT- themed books for young adults or autobiographies by gay men and women didn’t.

Needless to say, my head exploded with RAGE. 🙂 By now Amazon has backpedalled, stating the whole thing was caused by a “glitch”. I find it quite reassuring that online outrage (for example, we google bombed the term Amazon Rank, making it #1 in Google search results) resulted in an immediate reaction.

The image links to an overview of the whole issue by an author who was affected by this all the way back in February. I also found this recent AfterElton blogpost summarising quite nicely what bothers me so much about the whole thing, glitch or no glitch. And now I’ll go back to enjoying my day off…

New page

Using bananr.com to show off my Flickr photo album all nice and pretty, I added a page for my Project 365 photos.

In other news, I went to Basel last weekend and ended up at a skater party in Nordstern with Sibylle and Jean, where we also ran into Sibylle’s brother and his girlfriend. The music was all reggae, which got repetitive pretty quick, but still – dancing’s never bad, right?

New layout

Found another minimalist layout I quite like, courtesy of Cardeo.ca. If the Flickr stream resolves (at the time I’m typing this it’s still blank) it might stick around for a bit…

In other news boss is still out of the country until Thursday, probably. Which means I “work” half-days – not much actual work involved, more sitting around surfing the net. Or, y’know, changing my blog layout. *g*

Birthday bash

Some of my friends came by yesterday afternoon – we had chocolate cake my mom made, talked a lot, went for a walk and then tobogganed down a lane around the corner from our place. I also got some lovely pressies and then made spaghetti with four different kind of sauces. It was a lovely day, everyone seemed to have fun. Perfect wrap-up of the holiday season for me…
