25 now

Yesterday was my birthday – I’ve been on this planet for a quarter of a century. Not really all that long, all things considered. ๐Ÿ™‚

As has become tradition, the day was designated family time. We had planned to go up the Rigi for a day in the snow, but uncertain weather conditions made a 3 hour trip (one way) impractical. So instead we used the time off to go to Ikea. Not very festive but it was actually quite fun. And in the afternoon Michi and I watched a movie together (the poetic Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring), before it was time for the cake (Black Forest cake – a surprise made by Michi’s girlfriend) and the presents. Afterwards we played board- and cardgames and had fondue for dinner.

Altogether it really was a good birthday – and the celebrations with my friends are still to come! Tonight I’m meeting some of my closest girlfriends for dinner at my favorite Italian, and next Friday it’s party time with about 20 people, some of which I haven’t seen for a long time. Just thought 25 would be a good opportunity… ๐Ÿ™‚

Great timing, as usual

I’m afraid I’m getting sick again – just in time for New Year’s. I’m not feeling too bad yet, but I’m running a temperature, am coughing and feeling generally a bit under the weather. Not quite sure yet how to deal with this weekend, as I’ve got nice plans with some friends in addition to having to go to work tomorrow morning and Sunday afternoon. Blech.

Snow!

I’m not quite sure why I get so excited every time the white stuff comes down – probably something to do with happy childhood memories of building igloos and riding sleighs down the only hill in the vicinity… (I lived in Northern Germany, in Neumรƒยผnster, until I was seven, and I remember a lot of snow, while here in Basel it rarely really snows.)

In any case, even when it means that the sky is grey and it gets dark at 3pm (like now), I can’t help but be all bubbly and excited about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, and before the holidays are completely in the past – here are some photos I took, if you’re interested:

Merry Christmas

Have been completely wrapped up in the season – Christmas is still my favorite time of year… Our traditional family celebration last night was wonderful as always, a beautiful, peaceful family celebration, and I wish all of you (well, those that celebrate the season in any shape or form) a truly merry holiday!

Why meeee? :)

I’m sick again. Same as two weeks ago – fever and general ickiness. Now my mom wants me to go to the doctor, to find out why my immune system is doing such a crappy job. What fun…

Anyway, more cheerful news – realized that I hadn’t shared the photos of my refurbished room yet. It’s just as cramped as before (too much stuff!), but it seems bigger for some reason. And I really like the yellow carpet.

Rooms and holidays

Back in my room, which now looks as cozy as ever. Still have to hang pictures (although wallspace is scarce – too many books! *g*) and put up my CD racks, but other than that is’s all done. Walls were painted, a new carpet (in light yellow) was bought and all the furniture and things carried back in and re-arranged to improve studying conditions. Yesterday especially was exhausting, so now I’m really glad to have it behind me.

And right in time, too: A happy beginning of December to everyone that celebrates Christmas! Christmas is my favorite time of year and I’m very excited that it’s now officially begun – last Sunday was the first day of Advent, and now it’s December. My mom gave me the traditional Advent calendar (in the form of a cute postcard) and I opened the first door this morning.

I also found a Finnish Advent calendar online – very cute!

Edited to add: I’ve not forgotten.

Snow!

The first snow of the year came down in the night. Not a lot of it, but I’m so excited anyway – there’s just something magical about it in my eyes. Now, if only it sticks so I can take a walk in it… *twirls happily*

Sadly, I’m still sick, though. Spent yesterday morning clearing out my room for the painter on Monday and overdid it. So now I’m back in bed – in an empty room that looks more like a storage facility than a place where someone lives… But still, I’m proud that I managed to get it all done in such a short time (with my parents’ help). It’s almost worth being sick again. ๐Ÿ™‚

Feminism

I just had an epiphany of sorts: I am, in fact, a feminist.

I always had only the vague idea that feminism is some sort of political movement, too radical for my taste and smacking a bit of women-that-don’t-shave-and-hate-men. I had feminists for teachers in high school – Latin and German. They both wore chunky jewelry and hand-died cotton clothes, one had a kid and a stay-at-home husband (of whom she talked condescendingly) and had of course kept her name, and both seemed altogether stuck in the 70s. So my 14-year-old self thought, well, that’s definitely not me and decided that I wasn’t a feminist.

Well, I know better now: If you believe in, support, look fondly on, hope for, and/or work towards equality of the sexes, you are a feminist.

Concert experience

Yesterday Sibylle and I had tickets to see Coldplay in Zurich – and for the first time ever, we didn’t take the train, because I have my neighbours’ car at my disposal.

I must admit, I’m surprised every time at how well the driving goes (this is the third time this year that the neighbours let me use their car during their vacation). Of course I have weaknesses due to a lack of practice, but already on Friday I drove for several hours, mostly over curvy country and mountain lanes – and that was with my parents, which always makes me nervous. So yes, driving to Zurich yesterday went okay – we then parked in the garage and went to enjoy the concert.

Goldfrapp opened and Coldplay put on a great show, so we had an awesome time, despite some hick-ups like tall (and smelly) people crowding around us. The real horror came after – sitting in the garage for almost an hour, waiting to be able to leave. A prime road rage opportunity, which luckily no one used, except for some honking.

And then there was the drive back. Luckily for me Sibylle had missed her train because of the jam in the garage, so I had company for my very first nightly highway experience. Not being able to see further than my headlights made me nervous, and I was always glad when there were other cars in front of me. Well, enough of that. Obviously I made it back in one piece – got home around 1.30am.

Now I’m up again already – haven’t been able to sleep very well, so I’m already looking forward to going to bed tonight, truth be told… But I’m glad I had this experience – it’s definitely made the Coldplay concert a memorable one! ๐Ÿ™‚
