Sunday again

I’m feeling strangely lazy, a bit like moving underwater. Sadly, I can’t enjoy the beautiful weather, because I’ve got to go to work this afternoon. Have had a pretty good week, overall – Riverdance on Thursday was awesome, and Sibylle’s birthday party last night a lot of fun, as usual.

Maybe Regina and I will go on a spontaneous trip to Rome next Thursday (Ascension), because neither one of us has ever been. Hope this works out, it’d be pretty exciting, even if it’s just for three days or so.

This week’s Unconscious Mutterings:

  1. Playoffs::
  2. Morris:: Mini
  3. Break up:: is hard to do
  4. Eggs:: and bacon
  5. Parker:: Pyne (from Agatha Christie)
  6. Hardy Boys:: ??
  7. Deluxe:: Chicken (from McDonalds)
  8. Protection:: condoms
  9. Girl Scout:: brownies?
  10. Salsa:: everyone does it

Also, if you’d like me to remember your birthday, please go here. 🙂

Good day

Seems as if spring has returned – let’s hope it stays for a while this time around. I am really tired of January cold in May! For some reason I felt very content this afternoon, so much as I haven’t in a long time. I knew there were things to do, but it didn’t bother me – I just went my way and enjoyed every minute of being outside.

Even the hour with the shrink did not affect this peace, and I hope very much this is not a one-off… When I came home from uni, I felt so happy, I had the unusual (for me) urge to call people. And to anyone who knows about my slight phone phobia that should say something. Had a couple of nice conversations and finally hung up two hours later, having completely satisfied those weird social urges, in a very good way.

Also, I got a couple of cool computer-related links today, which I thought I’d share before signing off for the day. Just remember that I’m a Mac user, so this is mainly Mac stuff…

SideTrack (advanced trackpad driver for PowerBook/iBook)
KeyCues (find and learn menu shortcuts)
iDucks (cutest USB memory sticks ever)
BitTorrent and SuprNova.org (Peer2Peer file sharing client and a site with torrents to d/l)

And since I’m already reccing: Am currently listening to Maria Solheim, a young Norwegian singer who I discovered by chance a couple of months ago (picked a CD randomly in the library) and have come to love very much. I’ve been introducing people to her ever since – as Märrie puts it she’s “Dido minus the mainstream”. Lovely, lovely music!

Now I’ll turn in and will hopefully have as good a night as I had an afternoon/evening. 🙂

Listing management script

A friend of mine has been writing a PHP script to manage fanlistings and other listings and cliques. It looks so good, it makes me wish I’d discovered it earlier! But I’ll definitely try it out in any future fanlistings of mine. It can do pretty much anything you’d want it to do and is more versatile than PHPFanbase, which already is very good and which I’ve been using so far.

So check out Enthusiast, if you enjoy fanlistings and other things like that…

Taking it day by day

Been taking it easy since coming home – healing my shoulder seemed to use most of my body’s energy. And then, on Tuesday, when I was almost without pain, I took my bike to uni again – and promptly had an accident (involving a parking car, a car overtaking me, and streetcar rails), hurting my knees and jolting my shoulder. Apparently I’m not fit to do anything even the least bit risky these days… 🙂

Other than that I’ve become completely addicted to ‘Gilmore Girls’. Just love that show! Wish they’d release the DVD box over here, too, except only in America… But since the Austrian channel is currently repeating season 1, I’m doing what I’ve never done for any series before – I’m taping episodes. We’ll see for how long I can keep up with it.

And last but not least – a very happy birthday, Patty, dear!!! You’re one of the nicest persons I’ve met online and I’m very glad to know you! *hugs*

The Bookshelf is open!

My reading rec project has officially started – go, check it out, and tell me if something is broken or missing, or if you’ve got a good idea for the site. Also, if you’d like to help out with recs, feel free to get in touch! 🙂

The Bookshelf

BookCrossing

I released three books into the wilds of Basel tonight. Regina, who I met for hot chocolate and a chat, thought I was pretty weird to deposit books in phone cabins and cafés – but I really hope that not all of them get trashed, and that maybe someone even leaves a note on the site… A pretty cool way of sharing books that you don’t want to keep, in my opinion.

Read and Release at BookCrossing.com...

And this week’s Unconscious Mutterings:

  1. Elastic:: band
  2. Intervention:: of friends and family
  3. Risk:: of heartfailure
  4. Junk food:: McDonalds – annoyingly yum!
  5. Arrogance:: something I really can’t stand.
  6. Responsibility:: something I really treasure.
  7. X:: Files
  8. Marshall:: McLuhan (was that his name? some important communications guy)
  9. Kill:: Bill
  10. Brother:: Bear

Which shows us that I watch too many movie trailers.

Rec site and magazine launch

Been tweaking some more on The Bookshelf, my rec project. But I still haven’t found a way around my main problem – how to display the subcategories on the main category pages, in a way that’s not hard-coded, so that I don’t have to change it by hand every time a new subcategory is added. I simply don’t understand WP well enough – and I asked in the Support forum and was told something like this did not exist yet, but I should feel free to learn php and write it. Umm, okay…

But really, WordPress kicks some serious ass, I must say. Not to say anything against MT (which I understand more or less by now), but for the rec project the new subcategory feature (available only in the nightly alpha versions – but it works, that’s the main thing) was essential.

The youth magazine launch this morning went well – we wore t-shirts with the name on it and stood around in front of a couple of schools, pushing it at the unsuspecting students. A local TV station had send two girls to cover it, which led to some very amusing reactions when people saw the camera. I’ve got a couple of mags to send to people, but those of you who speak German and are interested, feel free to check out the website or the pdf file. Just know that I don’t agree with the way the blog article sounds – that was my ‘boss’, who wants to be cool and provocative. But still, the whole thing looks very good and pretty professional – most people thought they’d have to pay for it!

Spring is here…

On my way home from uni (where the Online Journalism teacher turned out to be Cyberwriter from my blogroll – global village, anyone? *g*) it just hit me what a beautiful, beautiful evening it was.

Although already 8pm, the air was still warm and the setting sun was tinting everything in warm gold tones. People were sitting on the grass in the park, their bikes lying next to them, just enjoying what almost felt like a summer evening. But the best part was the air, heavy with fragrance, so sweet it was almost cloying. Simply breathtaking, in the best sense of the word, it more than made up for what had been quite a bad day, both because of my shoulder and my mental state.

Sunset from the kitchen balcony

This is my (sadly failed) attempt to catch the atmosphere from out kitchen balcony. Click the thumb to get the big one.

Guess who’s back…

Well, I’m back from the island in one piece. There’s a lot to tell, naturally, but for now just the important stuff, because I just went through my emails (about 100, plus the same amount spam in my junk folder) and am pretty beat…

Texel is beautiful, and Märrie and I explored the island by car, on foot, by bike – and on horses. The last thing turned out not to be such a good idea, because I fell and hurt my right shoulder quite badly. Luckily nothing is broken, and it was the last day anyway, but I’m in pain and at times quite woozy.

That put a bit of a damper on an otherwise fantastically relaxing week, of which I’ll tell more in the travel log later. For now I really just wanted to check in here – I hope you’ve all had a good week!

My neck hurts, so I’ll get off the computer for the moment, although there’s so much left to do that I’m itching to catch up with on my websites… But I’m trying to be a good girl in order to be more or less fit for real life and uni on Monday.

Just need to mention one last thing – among the mostly website-related emails, the one that made me smile most was from a teacher from the university of Dortmund (Germany). She had found my site after a student of hers plagiarized my Anthropology paper on Annette Weiner’s study of the Trobriand islanders. She said that at least her student had copied something good… Didn’t someone say that imitation is a form of flattery? It sure feels that way! *g*

Okay, off to bed for real now. Here’s to a night without waking up from pain too often… It’s good to be back, though.

Bye bye bye

Not even email until at least Saturday, if not Sunday, next week… Will feel very weird, especially because I do take my laptop with me as a DVD player. Really should go to bed and try to sleep, because I have to catch my train at the ungodly hour of 7.14am tomorrow.

Märrie made this for us – isn’t it cute? Hope everyone who reads this will have a good week! *hugs*
