I was in the German fanclub for years and had the biggest crush on Mr. Spock. So I was kind of skeptical at first when I heard the rumours that J.J. was doing an “academy” movie. But some spoilers and reading the ‘Countdown’ prequel comic led to excitement winning out – especially after Märrie and I got to see 4 7-minute clips from the movie last Friday at Fedcon that looked very shiny indeed. (It was all very top secret – there even were special security guards in the room who used infrared to scan for people filming…)

After that I simply HAD to go see it today, right after work. The theatre was half-empty, but the crowd was appreciative – and I think it’s safe to say that I enjoyed every minute! Seriously, go watch it, it’s a great ride and you can really tell that J.J. is a huge fan.

This isn’t to say that I agree with everything. Be warned: Everything after the gap contains SPOILERS!
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
First of all, how everyone coincidentially ends up on the Enterprise (including a 17-year-old “Russian wunderkind” Chekov). But I guess you could argue that the universe is trying to fix itself, to unite what belongs together – after all that’s how most AU fic works, too.

Another thing I’m not sure about is the surprise pairing – J.J. has obviously been listening to Nichelle Nichols, because there is Spock/Uhura!!!! And it’s not subtle, oh no, there’s kissing. And almost-declarations of love. From Spock, I feel the need to add. I must say, I liked their special relationship in the original show, and when in the movie Uhura follows Spock to comfort him I squeed a bit in pleased surprise. But as it went on, I’m not sure I buy them in a Sarek/Amanda kind of way, which I think they try to imply. For me the openness only works as a moment’s weakness for Spock, the result of the destruction of Vulcan and his mother’s death. After all, they seem to have started the relationship when Spock was Uhura’s teacher (naughty!), but in the original show I don’t see them as a couple when they’re on board the Enterprise.

And this brings us to the Big One: As glad as I am that the AU premise explains most of the canon-discrepancies, in a way J.J. killed “our” Star Trek. Nothing that happens in any of the TV shows will happen now (except for ‘Enterprise’, I guess, but I know next to nothing about that show). Our heroes are dead, in a way. J.J. created a blank slate to play with. I guess this is easier for comic fans – I mean, there are a myriad of different X-Men universes, and people simply pick favorites. I think the only way I can accept this is by thinking of this movieverse the way I think about the mirrorverse – there, but not the “real” universe, because I need my Star Trek to be alive.

But altogether AWESOME! Will definitely see it again and in the meantime I’ll be filling in some of the blanks…

In other news, will be alone in the office tomorrow. Think I’ll take my laptop with me so I can catch up on some shows. And woot, it’s almost weekend and my cough is almost gone! 🙂

Most of you know that the original Star Trek is pretty much my first fannish love.
