Good day

First I learn that my thesis was accepted, so I’m definitely going to the exams – and then the doorbell rings and I get flowers, totally out of the blue from Sibylle. Just. Big smile time and lots of love for my best friend.

Edit: Photo of the flowers on my desk:

Not dead yet

I know one could have thought so from my silence. But fact is, my life is just very, very boring right now and I don’t feel like whining about how behind I am on my thesis all the time. This won’t change at least for another month, when the deadline for my thesis is, but maybe longer, what with the exams coming up. All in all I won’t be done with uni until the end of February 07, I’m afraid.

But let’s not talk about that – there were a couple of other things in the past couple of months, like a family trip to Berlin, a week’s vacation in Como with Sibylle and the football World Cup. All of which has been documented in pictures, as you can see on my Flickr album.

So just consider this a life sign and please don’t give up on me! 🙂

ETA: Also, thought it was time for a summer layout, so I was a naughty girl and put one up while at work. 😉

Boring life

And that’s not going to change in the next months. All I do is sit at home and work on my thesis. Now and then I meet up with some friends, but since several of my closest friends are also in their final year of uni that’s not very often. At least that way I don’t have to feel too guilty about leading such a hermit’s life…

The other thing I do is watch CSI. Love that show, and for some reason the orderliness and structure of crime shows like that feels reassuring, relaxing. And, to satisfy my hankering for organization, I put together a list of my TV obsessions. After all, you can already see the photos I take, the books I read and the movies I watch, so TV just had to follow, I guess… Huh, this line of thought could lead to some interesting theories about opening one’s life to strangers. Maybe another time… 🙂

Yesterday I broke my routine a bit, though, and made a little something to hang over my desk, cheer me up while I’m working: a collage of my closest RL friends and family.

Snow and fasnacht

I finished uploading the photos taken during the record snow falls and during Chienbäse and Morgestraich (carnival traditions in the area). The last couple of days are something I sure as hell won’t forget…

Also, I made a couple of small films, to give you an impression of what it’s like to be there – rightclicksave, if you want to see them:

The view from my window

It’s so strange – ten days ago I had the first brush with hayfever, and now it’s winter again. I like it, though – if there’s one thing this winter (apparently the coldest in 14 years or so) has shown me, especially in comparison with the awfully hot last summer, it’s that I really prefer cold to heat, although I used to say the contrary. After all, cold can be easily compensated by wearing a couple of layers, drinking a nice hot tea or wrapping up in a blanket, while heat can only be countered by closing all the shutters and moving as little as possible (at least in a country where aircon is the exception).

Anyway, the reason for this rambling:

Treating myself

Went to the trade fair Muba with Sandra and just had to buy this – it was a great price, and it’s real silk. Just something very special, so that the black evening gown I bought in Canada in 1999 isn’t my only outfit for special occasions anymore.

This drained my cash, as I definitely hadn’t counted on buying a dress – that was probably good, since otherwise I’d probably have bought lots of other pretty knickknacks from the different international stalls. Many thanks to Fränzi for the free tickets! 🙂

25 now

Yesterday was my birthday – I’ve been on this planet for a quarter of a century. Not really all that long, all things considered. 🙂

As has become tradition, the day was designated family time. We had planned to go up the Rigi for a day in the snow, but uncertain weather conditions made a 3 hour trip (one way) impractical. So instead we used the time off to go to Ikea. Not very festive but it was actually quite fun. And in the afternoon Michi and I watched a movie together (the poetic Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring), before it was time for the cake (Black Forest cake – a surprise made by Michi’s girlfriend) and the presents. Afterwards we played board- and cardgames and had fondue for dinner.

Altogether it really was a good birthday – and the celebrations with my friends are still to come! Tonight I’m meeting some of my closest girlfriends for dinner at my favorite Italian, and next Friday it’s party time with about 20 people, some of which I haven’t seen for a long time. Just thought 25 would be a good opportunity… 🙂

Snow!

I’m not quite sure why I get so excited every time the white stuff comes down – probably something to do with happy childhood memories of building igloos and riding sleighs down the only hill in the vicinity… (I lived in Northern Germany, in Neumünster, until I was seven, and I remember a lot of snow, while here in Basel it rarely really snows.)

In any case, even when it means that the sky is grey and it gets dark at 3pm (like now), I can’t help but be all bubbly and excited about it. 🙂

Oh, and before the holidays are completely in the past – here are some photos I took, if you’re interested:

Why meeee? :)

I’m sick again. Same as two weeks ago – fever and general ickiness. Now my mom wants me to go to the doctor, to find out why my immune system is doing such a crappy job. What fun…

Anyway, more cheerful news – realized that I hadn’t shared the photos of my refurbished room yet. It’s just as cramped as before (too much stuff!), but it seems bigger for some reason. And I really like the yellow carpet.
