Signing off until Tuesday

Tomorrow I’ll go skiing for a couple of days. Will stay with one of my oldest friends in the Wallis and am really looking forward to it. I do have to write an article about New Zealand until Monday, though, so I’ll take my laptop with me. So you can still get in touch with me. I’ll check for comments, but won’t be online other than that.

Some of my friends have suggested that I’m experiencing burnout more than my SAD at the moment, which feels weird, because, after all, part of my problem this winter has been that I didn’t do anything. But who knows, maybe they’re right. It’ll be good to get away from it all for a bit, to stop giving myself grief about not getting anything done.

I did get something done today, btw – I made a prettier layout for Bookish, using a gorgeous book graphic a friend made for me. I’m glad I managed to do that – now I can leave with a semi-good conscience. 🙂

Deep Blue

I just went to see Deep Blue with my mom. Regina and her mom, as well as her brother with girlfriend, came with us. A really great movie – those images of sealife were absolutely stunning and accompanied by beautiful music.

Now I want an underwater layout – something beautiful, with fish and corals, all in blue… Someone stop me, as I just got my lovely chocolates and love them still! 🙂

Less amusing is the amount of spam comments I’ve gotten lately – at least one or two every day. But I don’t want to turn off the comment feature, I really don’t… Any suggestions?

More Fasnacht

Fasnacht is over for this year – but oh, was it fun! I got sick after Monday, but still managed to have a little walk around after work on Wednesday with my brother. Took some pics, but most of them didn’t turn out so great. These are my favorites (click for full-size image):
cliqueheadsWaggis
The first pic is of a ‘Schyssdräggzygli’, a band of people just walking through the streets playing their pipes and drums. The second one just struck me as funny – a clique (band) took off their headmasks and went for a beer. And the last one shows two Waggis, which are probably the most typical costume, making fun of our Alsace neighbours. They can be quite scary, because they sometimes grab you and proceed to stuff you with confetti or hit you with their paddles – but those were friendly. 🙂

If you still haven’t got enough – Shelly, an American friend of mine who lives in Basel now, posted about her first visit to Fasnacht and took some really cool pictures: one, two, three.

Basel Fasnacht

Die drey scheenschte Dääg (‘the three most beautiful days’), that’s what carnival is called in Basel. It’s a really big thing, with tenthousands of people participating and hundredthousands of people attending. Normally I go to the Morgestraich, the official beginning at 4am on Monday morning, and a couple more time times to see the brassbands and take in the atmosphere – but this year I showed Adrian around, so I’ve done a bit more… And it’s not over yet – tonight is the big brassband concert, which I never miss, and the exhibition of the big lanterns, which are always worth a closer look.

He took pictures at the Chienbäse in close-by Liestal on Sunday night, where people carry burning brooms and huge burning wagons through the town streets, as well as during Morgestraich, and has posted some of them on his site. Here are some of my favorites from Chienbäse:

Another week over

This week has been pretty emotionally draining. Obviously I have to find something in addition to my daily light-therapy, because it really can’t go on like this. So I called first the hospital where I was diagnosed, which was not very helpful, because I’m not quite ready for anti-depressiva yet. Then I called my doctor, and he recommended a shrink to me. I guess I’ll call him on Monday and see what he has to say…

That is, if he’s open on Monday – it’s carnival time here in Basel, die drey scheenste Dääg (the three most beautiful days) are starting Monday morning at 4am. And I’ll be there, together with Adrian, for who I’ll play Fasnacht guide. Is going to be fun – freezing, though.

More about Fasnacht (hopefully with pics) later. Have a good Oscars weekend everyone! 🙂

Of memes and domains

This week’s Unconscious Mutterings:

  1. Angel:: wings
  2. Birth:: day
  3. Logic:: Mr. Spock
  4. Stars:: in the sky
  5. Nursery:: rhyme
  6. View:: point
  7. Hart:: to Hart
  8. Creation:: of the world
  9. End:: of all things
  10. Fortune:: cookie

I was supposed to go to work again today, but for the first time since I started there I found a replacement on short notice because I didn’t feel up to it. But I’m feeling better than yesterday, especially mentally, so that’s good.
It’s all grey and rainy outside, so I guess this’ll be a lazy day spent drinking tea and resting… And maybe I’ll even get some reading done for my fieldwork paper.

I’m also thinking of getting another domain for myself and for hosting. That stuff is addictive! 🙂 It’ll probably be raspberry-kisses.net – what do you think of it? I’ve also been kind of tempted to get fandomish.net, as a purely fannish domain for fanlistings and stuff, but I’ve always dreamed of a raspberry domain. Chocolate only won out the first time, because well… it’s chocolate! *g*

Actually I came up with a whole list of names – I had way too much fun with GoDaddy. My third favorite is probably faerie-wings.net. Tell me what you think of my ideas – maybe I’ll change my mind about the raspberries…

  1. raspberry-kisses.net
  2. raspberrykiss.net
  3. fandomish.net
  4. fan-nish.net
  5. faerie-wings.net
  6. dance-with-me.net
  7. sun-kisses.com
  8. butterfly-kissed.net
  9. empty-pages.net
  10. pen-and-paper.net

I just thought the last two up, as a matter of fact, because besides chocolate, raspberries and fannish things, I’d also kind of like something to do with writing, with books and pages… Sadly enough, bookish.net/.com/.org is already taken, and I don’t want a .us domain. If only Swiss domains (.ch) weren’t so expensive…

But now I’m starving and am off to breakfast. 🙂

Another life sign

I’m a bit sick today, which doesn’t go very well with having to work. But so’s life, right? Haven’t done much all week, despite the break and the many things waiting to be done – just didn’t have the energy. Don’t know if it’s SAD or the flu or whatever, and it doesn’t really matter, does it? These six weeks will be over much too quick in any case.

But I haven’t just been sitting around – I’ve reorganized my site collective and I’ve gone to the movies a couple of times. Too many good films in the theatre right now – three more I have already agreed on going to see with people, and there are some more I’d be interested in. I wish we had 1$ cinemas like they do in the US! 🙂

Now I need to get ready for work. Hope it won’t be too unbearable – will take more meds with me, just in case, because there’s no going home early in that job, as I’m all by myself at the reception.

Wishing everyone a good weekend!

Obsession

All in all I had a good weekend — spent Saturday with Adrian, taking a little road trip through Switzerland, and then spent most of Sunday in front of the TV before meeting a couple of friends for drinks and chats in the evening.

The TV marathon happened because at the moment I am completely hooked on the first season of ’24’, which I borrowed from Adrian. I started watching yesterday morning and am halfway through now — that show has me on my toes, that’s for sure… 🙂

This is the last week of uni before the break, but I’m not feeling very productive at the moment, regardless of the two papers I’m supposed to write and the article about blogging that I should have finished next Saturday and have not even started. This semester was over so very quick, it’s crazy, and I didn’t really accomplish anything. Hopefully I’ll be better next semester, what with spring coming and all…

And here’s this week’s Unconscious Mutterings:

  1. Identity:: crisis
  2. Reveal:: myself
  3. Live:: life to the fullest
  4. Attitude:: problem
  5. Night:: out on the town
  6. Nevada:: Vegas
  7. Weekend:: trip
  8. Write:: block
  9. Friend:: the best
  10. Seventeen:: I’m glad I’m not anymore

Procrastinating 101

I’m a bit sick at the moment, so I’m at home. But instead of using the opportunity to get caught up on stuff (like uploading the pics I took in the last days), I’m just lazing about. Well, I guess we’re all entitled to that when we’re sick.

Just glad that it’s nothing bad – feeling better already, as a matter of fact. And since I’ve started light-therapy I haven’t really been sick, which is a big difference from the last winters. Makes for a nice change and the occasional not-so-great day much better to bear. 🙂

Cozy night in

I didn’t have class today, because of an information day for interested highschool students, so my brother and I went on a major movie buying spree. My brother is the movie nerd in our family, but I love movies too (who doesn’t?), although I’m only interested in the original English versions. Which means that I mostly have to buy my movies instead of being able to just tape them from TV.

So today I ended up with five DVDs, plus the X-Men collector’s edition (X1 and X2 combined), which Michi and I bought together. Have not spent so much money on stuff in ages – but it was fun! And now I’m curled up in my bed, my laptop beside me, watching some of my new films. Lovely!
