Catching up

For the last week I’ve had a visitor from England, which explains my quietness, since Amy and I had quite a full program. I got to play tourguide through Basel, we did a day trip to Zurich – and then there was the Fasnacht. The ‘three most beautiful days’ were of course the high point of Amy’s visit, especially the Chienbäse in Liestal on Sunday evening and the Morgestraich at 4am on Monday. A cousin of my father’s and my brother came with us, and we had a great time.

I’ll probably post some of the photos taken in the last week once my life has calmed down again (tomorrow’s another full day, after that I only have to write on my paper in the week before going to Glasgow with Regina) – but for now, here are some fantastic photos my friend Jill took. Much better than anything I’ve got! 🙂

‘Outing’ myself

As some of you already know, I write fanfiction, have been for years. And most of it these days is slash – stories with homosexual content.

Usually I keep this part of my interests out of this blog (although there’s a link in the new about me section), since it’s not everybody’s cup of tea – but today, there was an article in the London Metro magazine, which quotes me. I have no idea how the author found me, since I’m definitely not one of the ‘big names’ in fandom, but I think it’s amusing. Not the best article ever (after all, there have been scientific papers devoted to the phenomenon), but it’s a nice introduction. Wanna see?

Not my corner of the net…

For my presentation on Friday I tried out a couple of MUDs – and oh dear, is that not for me!

Equally stressful experience as chat, with white on black text tiring my eyes as I strained to keep up with the multitudes of expressions I know nothing about. I mean, in that one MUD, Aardwolf, they had a real introduction for newbies – but still I felt completely lost, doing what they told me to but never really getting anywhere, struggling to keep up with the text on the screen, sometimes related to me, sometimes not. Maybe a graphic-based game like EverQuest would be easier to get into, but that’s only for Windows, so I couldn’t try it.

Although the thought of playing in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld is tempting, I can live out my imagination in writing fanfiction. I guess I’ll stick to my familiar and comfortable online interactions via email and comments…

Procrastination

I should be 1) writing my paper, 2) preparing the presentation for Friday, or 3) reading homework for Thursday. Instead all I feel like doing is sitting on the couch, wrapped in as many layers as possible. Not exactly down, just feeling a bit displaced.

It’s too damn cold!

I mean, I love snow, don’t get me wrong – only it hasn’t really snowed all that much and I’m supposed to be writing on my paper…

We have the heat up pretty much as high as it goes, but our radiators don’t seem to work properly (plus our windows are 30+ years old and badly isolated) and it’s only about 18°C in the apartment. My preferred room temperature would be more like 22-24 degrees… Have I mentioned recently how easily I get cold? I mean, I’m wearing two pairs of socks, my poncho, and am wrapped in a blanket drinking hot tea most of the time – and still I’m cold… It would be funny, except how the hell am I supposed to type and be focussed when my fingers are turning into icicles?

I guess I’ll just re-read the novel for my paper, so I don’t feel like a complete cop-out. Bah.

Also, this week’s Unconscious Mutterings:

  1. Coroner:: CSI
  2. Mystify:: myself
  3. Corroborate:: elaborate?
  4. Misinterpret:: happens much too easily sometimes

  9. Stitched:: needle

Is there anything more fun than watching ‘Diet Trials’ while eating chips and chocolate?

  1. Yoda:: it isn’t easy being green… 😀
  2. Mensa:: uni cafeteria
  3. Pink:: pretty in
  4. Text message:: better than the phone
  5. Galactic:: express
  6. Chicks:: love flicks
  7. Quesadilla:: something Mexican?
  8. Backpack:: the only way to travel! *g*
  9. Socket:: plug
  10. Compromise:: is the key to a successful relationship – or something

I slept in!

Came home from Museumsnacht (where I had a lovely time with Sibylle) around 12.30 and fell asleep after finishing Neil Gaiman’s Smoke and Mirrors around 2.30, wishing desperately not to wake up at my usual time – and when I opened my eyes it was 9.13! Whee!

In case you think I’m exaggerating – just keep in mind that I haven’t slept longer than 8.30 (which happened only, like, twice) since I came back from New Zealand/Australia in October 2003. No kidding. So this is really exciting for me.

Blah

Not in a very good mood. Probably partly the weather and partly the remnants of my cold, which is still plaguing me somewhat. Tonight’s open night at all museums in Basel, which Sibylle and I always go to, but truth be told I’m not really in the mood for crowds. But I don’t know if I can call this off, seeing as it’s only once a year. This is the first time I’ve felt like this in weeks, so I guess I should be grateful.

Unrelated – a number of total strangers have signed up for my Birthday Alarm. That kind of irritates me, since I don’t really see the sense in it. If you’ve come through this blog, would you mind stepping forward and letting me know? Would be cool!

Reading reading reading

Because I’ve been sick the last few days I’m currently trying to read about 200 pages of Freud’s ‘Traumdeutung’ for tomorrow. Already read my homework for today and the dream chapter of Dostoyevki’s ‘Schuld und Sühne’ (too lazy to look up the English titles, sorry *g*), which is also for tomorrow’s class. What the heck did the teacher think, hm? Anyway I don’t think I’ll manage to read everything – or if I do, it’ll be skimming without much actually getting through.

But first – time for lunch. I’m by myself today, since my parents are at some meeting and my brother’s got a soccer tournament. It’s kinda nice, actually.

The day after

Had a really really awesome time with my friends – they’re a great bunch of people and we had loads of fun, just talking, talking, talking (and eating *g*). And that with my voice completely gone – it all was just a tad quieter than normal… There might be pictures later, actually. 🙂

Today, my voice was back, btw – sadly, that was only because the cold has moved to my head, and I felt actually much worse than yesterday. So, all in all, it was good timing – it’d have sucked majorly if I’d felt as sick as I talked like last night! Therefore I’ve been taking things easy today – did a bit of cleaning up, and then basically curled up in bed with my brandnew New Zealand sheepskin, result of three of my friends joining and fulfilling this secret wish of mine. The only thing I did, really, was to write a review of ‘Alexander’ for my brand-new movie blog (which I’ll be sharing with my brother, movie geek extraordinaire *g*). Btw, you can find links to all my interest-related pages on the right, under About: Life. Just sayin’… 🙂

I must say, I’m so glad that my mom called around for me (because there was no chance that I could talk on the phone) and found a someone to fill in for me at work today. Hopefully I’ll be back on my feet tomorrow for the new week – but most of all I’m just so happy that my birthday party turned out to be so much fun, despite everything. Major love to all of my fabulous guests, should you by any chance read this… *hugs*
