The therapeutic effect of television

I watch bits and pieces from my four seasons of Gilmore Girls pretty much every day. I don’t know, watching those two women in that strange town with all their quirky friends, everybody talking a mile a minute, it just makes me happy. It’s my comfort TV, like chocolate is my comfort food. Especially when I’m tired or a bit sad or lonely, I can turn the TV on and there they are, inviting me to get lost in their ups and downs, the funny and the serious. Sometimes I laugh out loud, sometimes I even cry a little bit, and it feels good.

This bit of randomness is brought to you by an hour spent curled up on my sheepskin, wrapped in my blanket, watching my fourth season tapes… 🙂

Zündstoff needs help

Some of you will remember Z?ndstoff, the youth mag my brother and I are involved in. After it struggled as a regional magazine here in Basel, my brother’s friend Christian Keller, a 22-year-old student/part-time journalist for local newspapers and TV stations, who founded and ran the mag single-handedly, has been planning the national relaunch of the magazine for April.

The change to a nation-wide (or rather – a release in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland) mag was done mostly because the Basel edition had failed to attract the big sponsors interested in advertisting directed towards a young audience. Things looked much better, and preparations for the April launch have been going strong – until one of our biggest sponsors pulled back. So now we’re lacking 5000 Swiss francs (about $4300) to be able to publish the magazine – and are desperately looking for people willing to sponsor us.

I don’t quite know why I’m posting this here, since a) no one here is rich and b) the mag is published in Switzerland, in German, so not exactly a cause that most of you would have any reason to support. But I guess I just felt the need to do something – Switzerland lacks a good youth magazine, and this one is being done 100% by volunteers (not even Christian gets any money – on the contrary, he’s donated his salary to the saving of his project), all in their early 20s, trying to put together a good magazine.

So here’s the button – any and all money donated by clicking it will go directly to financing the first nation-wide issue of Z?ndstoff:

Achoo!

Oh dear, I’d conveniently forgotten that the arrival of spring, long-awaited as it usually is (and especially this year, which was the longest winter I can remember experiencing here in Basel) unfortunately also means the arrival of my hayfever.

I shouldn’t be complaining, I know, since a) a lot of people suffer much more from it than I do (like Sandra, who has to take cortison against it) and b) I’ve already gotten a late start, since normally I’m already starting in late January, with the first hazel pollen… But still, it does kind of ruin the pleasure of going for a walk – I’d been really looking forward to it, but when I was outside, my nose started feeling all ticklish and my eyes and throat went all scratchy, although I had armed myself with nasal spray and eyedrops before leaving the house.

I guess it’ll be another month or two, when all the early bloomers are done, until I can truly enjoy the lovely sunshine. Achoo! 😀

Also, haven’t done the Unconscious Mutterings in a while:

  1. Shape up:: shake up your life
  2. New Orleans:: Mardi Gras
  3. In the bedroom:: I live my life
  4. All the time:: forever
  5. Philosophy:: Nietsche
  6. Tyler:: Vince (QAF UK)
  7. Disturbed:: dazed and confused
  8. French kiss:: Meg Ryan
  9. Solidify:: liquid
  10. Furtive:: stolen moments

Off to Lausanne

Tomorrow there’s an International Career Day at the university of Lausanne, where over 20 international organizations will present themselves to grad and doctorate students. It’s bound to be very fascinating and useful, considering that that’s exactly what I’m dreaming of doing later…

I’ve found a fellow Cultural Anthropology student who will come along, and maybe Cindy will meet us there, so it’ll be an interesting day, I’m sure.

Also, I’m in the mood for a new, spring-themed layout, something clean and simple. But I just installed the new WordPress 1.5 on my music site and have not yet quite mastered the art of making layouts there, so I’m a bit daunted.

Indulgence

When I was in Edinburgh I spent some time in a bookstore and found a Moleskine notebook (ruled, because otherwise my writing gets all crooked), which I’ve been dreaming of buying for a while now, for any writing inspiration I might have when away from my laptop. I don’t know, there’s just something about Moleskine that appeals to me… Anyone of you use Moleskine?

And so, since I’ve been thinking of starting something like a daily ‘state of me’ thing, to give me a better idea about any connections between my mood/my health/what’s going on in my life I splurged on a Pocket Weekly Diary. Took me a while to find a site to order it from, since I didn’t want to have to pay a lot of postage in addition to the price of the book, but I finally found Buchkatalog.de, where it’s still available (which it wasn’t on several other sites) and will be send, free of charge, to a local bookstore. Cool!

Now I only need to find a place that sells the travel journal, for Japan this fall… 😀

More photos

Thought I might as well start really using my Flickr account and uploaded some photos I’ve been promising people forever…

First, all photos from my Scotland trip with Märrie. Took me only over half a year to finally share them – hope you enjoy! 🙂

And then, the photos me and Amy (aka ‘Doodle’ *g*) took during her week can be found here, which includes pictures from this year’s Fasnacht in Basel (especially Morgestraich) and Liestal (Chienbäse – the fire parade thingie).

Scotland photos

Decided I’d had enough of trying to find the perfect way to share my photos with the world – and splurged on a Pro account for Flickr, which has a plugin that goes with my iPhoto.

Therefore you can find 71 photos here – and a short run-down of my week in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inellan in the travel log.

Guess who’s back from Scotland again (although she’d have liked to stayed longer – maybe forever)? 😀

Regina and I had an absolutely fantastic time, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and a small village on the Firth of Clyde called Inellan. More about all of this some time later, as it’s been a looong day, considering that we left the hostel this morning around 9am. Although luckily, the hours spent waiting at airports by myself (since Regina took a train down to a friend in Brighton) were made much more bearable by the good books I bought… We all knew that I wouldn’t be able to resist, didn’t we? *g*

But all of this are stories for another day… When I’ve caught up with everything. G’night!

Crossposted to the blog and travel log.

Scotland, here I come again!

Just came off the phone with Regina – we’re leaving for a week in Scotland (mostly Glasgow, but also a bit of traveling) on Friday. Yay, I’m slowly getting all excited! I can’t really afford it, but I just love Scotland and couldn’t say no when Regina asked me… Glasgow is great (I finally want to see the Charles Rennie Mackintosh museum), and I hope we’ll get the chance to catch a bit of the nightlife, since she’s got a friend there who plays in a band and is therefore bound to know the good places for live music. We’ll also visit Edinburgh, because that’s just a must for any Scotland trip, and might go see a bit of the countryside, too. It’s all very much not planned – we’ve got a twin room at a hostel for the first two nights, after that it’s all open…

The weather will probably be even a bit warmer than it is here – we had some lovely snow again today, which I celebrated by taking a walk and catching snowflakes with my tongue. 🙂
