Gruyeres – John Howe exhibtion

Saturday me and Cindy finally saw each other again (first time after months – one could think we lived in different countries instead of just different cantons) when we did a trip to Gruy?res (known mainly for its cheese) to see the John Howie exhibtion at the castle there.

It was a beautiful day (if you didn’t mind the fact that it’s winter in October), and we discovered once more what a gorgeous country Switzerland is (although also pretty touristy) as we explored the castle and admired the snow-covered mountains surrounding it. Plus, Howe’s LOTR illustrations were awesome. I am such a Rings fanatic – can’t wait for Return of the King in December, so this was practically heaven for me! ๐Ÿ™‚

The village and castle of Gruy?res:

Some of my favorite pictures:
It was such a pity that they didn’t sell any postcards, or even a calendar, only a book that was too expensive for me – so this had to do…

And now I have to go to work. Have a good Sunday!

Winter

I am totally aware that it’s only October and therefore still fall here in Basel (where we get maybe a week of snow a year normally) — but someone should tell the weather that! ๐Ÿ™‚

And because I had my camera out, here’s a pic of my room, which could be summarized with three Cs: Cozy, Cluttered, and Computer (well, and books, but that wouldn’t fit with the theme… *g*).

Bidding

I’ve never actually taken part in an ebay auction (I paid the asked-for price for my camera), so this is a first… So far it’s looking good for my Elf dress — but still five minutes to go, so everything could change!

Oi, this is pretty nervous business — don’t think I’m cut out for it.

ETA: Yay, I got it! 50 cents more than I had planned, so that’s okay. Pretty, huh?

It will be a bit too long, but that’s better than too short, in my book.

Miehsam

That means “difficult” or “hard work” (more or less) in Swiss German.

I’ve been copypasting the lost blog entries by hand. Finished the study journal, but am nowhere near done here. But I’ll get there eventually, working my way back to my first post.

Been enjoying to surf some blogs from my “interesting people” blogroll – it’s not as easy as my friendslist on LiveJournal, but it’s more individual and diverse. Now, if only my own blog was as interesting… ๐Ÿ™‚

Will go downtown this afternoon, to buy train tickets to visit Mรคrrie, get some new books (and the latest Ben Harper CD!) from the library, and find out about restoring my Australia photos to my camera. Once I’ve made a decision about the photos (is it really an option or should I just forget about it?), I can start taking pictures again – Saturday the big fall fair starts again, which is always fun and should give some photo opportunities.

I’m such a web amateur!

So this is not so easy after all – the blog was down for a while, because I was stupid and misspelled the local site path. Thanks to girlie at the MT forum that’s fixed now. But as you might see the importing of the old entries didn’t work – it only imported the title lines. Weird, that… Well, at least the blog is up and running again!

Moved!

So the moving is complete – everything is on a new server… Only thing that obviously did not get imported is the comments, which is a pity. But at least I did manage to import all my entries – I just don’t know why everything ends with a /… Oh well, could have been worse. Could not have worked at all! ๐Ÿ™‚

Now it’s Sunday and my mom is calling me for tea and viewing of their holiday pictures. Catch ya later!

Moving webhosts

I am currently switching to a reseller plan with another webhost and have (among other things) to reinstall MovableType in the process. So if in the next couple of days this site appears to be down, or wacky, that’s the reason. Wish me luck! ๐Ÿ™‚

Warning: superficial answers ahead!

I’m not bored, but I was in the mood for a meme…

The Thursday Thumb-Twiddler

1. Do you get enough exercise in your daily life? If not, why not?
Probably not. Because I’m a lazy twat and never do my exercises. ๐Ÿ™‚ Seriously, I ride my bike, but that’s about it. Next week uni starts again, though, and I’ll take ballroom dancing again as well as yoga, so I’ll have a better conscience.

2. If you could speak for one minute by phone with anyone in the world, who would it be, and what would you talk about?
Because I’m feeling superficial I’m saying Billy Boyd (from Lord of the Rings). And I’d quiz him about his friendship with Dominic Monaghan, because they’re so cute together. But then, he’s Scottish, so he could read me the phonebook and I’d be happy… *g* /teeny moment

3. If you could automatically know the answer to one question about about every person you met, what would you want that question to be?
Probably “Do you like me?”, because no matter how much I improve my self-esteem, there’s still much room for self-doubt…

Home life

So I’ve been home for a bit more than a week now, and it’s starting to feel normal again — but not completely, because uni only starts next Monday. I’ll have to go and pick up my Salome paper then, which seems to have been accepted but needs some corrections done.

Have not yet started to work on my fieldwork paper, because I discovered that my supervisor is in Africa until the new year, so there’s no hurry whatsoever. Not that there is a deadline or anything, we can take as long as we want to, but I have to finish it this semester if I want to keep to my schedule.
I have difficulties as it is, because both in Medias and German Lit there are no interesting classes in which to write the second paper I was counting on writing this semester. Sucks — Salome was already a compromise class, not something I really wanted to do, and now it looks as if I have to write my second German Lit paper in something I’m not really interested in as well. Oi, I’m just so wrong for German Lit! (Can’t be helped, though, not without prolonging the time until I get my MA unduly… *sigh*)

So next week uni life will have me again, which means right at first to stand in line to sign up for yoga and ballroom dancing, because I totally forgot that it’s now possible to do so online and went to the website much too late. That’s going to be fun… But I’m hoping that Sibylle (who’s coming home from England today – yay!) will have to do the same, so I won’t be queuing there all by myself at 7am.

In other news, my little brother is writing his first uni paper, in Cultural Anthropology (one of his minors, at my prompting *g*). He didn’t do anything during the entire break (driving my mom crazy with it, of course), and now he hasn’t done anything else but write all week long. Problem is, he has a second paper due in History (his major)… Oh, he’ll learn that he has to take care of those things himself, that no one will make him do them. Eventually. ๐Ÿ™‚

Tomorrow my parents will take Michi and I to a castle/hotel that they might end up having their 25th wedding anniversary at. You have to know that this won’t be until 2005, but my mom fell in love with that place and they’re obviously booked out already until Easter 2005… So we’ll take a little trip over the German border and have a look at it.

Another trip Michi and I are thinking of doing is to go to Gruyรจre (in the Romandie, the French speaking part of Switzerland) to the John Howe exhibition. After all, when will be the next time for us Lord of the Ring nuts that something like that will happen in our own country?
Speaking of LOTR — in November I’ll indulge myself and go visit my friend Mรคrrie in Bonn, just when the big RingCon will happen there. The fan in me can’t wait to see John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) and Craig Parker (Haldir) and lots of other interesting people! I’m also hoping to be able to go in costume — I’m currently looking for an affordable dress to wear as an Elf… Heh, fangirling is fun! ๐Ÿ™‚
