Becoming sporty…

For a while I was doing aerobics of DVDs quite regularly, but last year was tough, health-wise, and then I moved into my shoebox where I can’t even practice my tai chi.

But as I mentioned before, a few weeks ago I started getting more active again, more so than possibly ever before, and I’ve kept at it – no small thanks to the existence of shiny apps and gadgets… So really, people that say the internet results in lazy people that never get off their butts, all I can say: HA! *g*

So here’s what I’m doing:

200 sit-ups
Goal: 200 sit-ups, over the course of 6 weeks (3 times a week)
Resources: Website (free) with the accompanying iPhone app ($2 or something like that)

It’s only about ten minutes for one session, so really no big deal. I’ve just finished week 3 today – I do it on days I don’t run (see below), so I sometimes even do it 4 times a week. I’m already planning on doing 100 push-ups once I’m done with this – who knows, I might gain some arm muscles for the first time ever… 🙂

Couch-to-5K
Goal: Be able to run 5k (or 3 miles), over the course of 9 weeks (3 times a week ca. 30 minutes, incl. warm-up and cool-down)
Resources: Website (free) and the GetRunning iPhone app (ca. $2 again) – there are others, but this was the cheapest and I’m rather happy with it. Plus they’re also supportive on their site and via Twitter. If you don’t have an iPhone/iPod Touch, recced this Chubby Jones podcast.
I’m also thinking about trying out tracking apps TrailGuru (free) or RunKeeper (free / $10 for Pro), once I get to running longer than half an hour…

The running is really coming along – I’m in week 3 now and can already feel a difference from when I started. It works by alternating runs and walks – I’ll have to be a bit careful about my knees, now that the running parts are getting a bit longer. To my surprise I was only sore after my first run. Possibly because a friend showed me some stretches and told me that it’s almost as bad to stretch too much as not at all.

Pretty useful tips can also be found on About.com, like this video on running form. Once I reach 5k, I want to find some nice routes, possibly with Walk Jog Run – and I’ve bookmarked the ZüriCupLauf beginners’ runs for possibly signing up for one or two.

And yes, I can barely believe that this is me either. *g*
