Movie musings

The mail today brought the DVD of 2005’s Pride & Prejudice. There are many things that make this version weaker than my beloved 1995 mini-series (casting, pacing, filming decisions), but it’s still P&P and makes me happy. Part of the bonus features is the US ending of the movie - I’d heard about it, but I must say I’m definitely glad they chose not to release it in the theatres over here like that. Just. Wrong. *shudders*

On the other hand I can pay more attention to the supporting cast now, which is at times really excellent. I’ve always rather liked Mary, for example, and here she’s just lovely. And I do like Mrs. Bennett much better here, because she seems less like a caricature and more like a real person.

I have decided that I also absolutely need to have the 1980 mini-series as part of my P&P collection (which also includes an imported VHS of the 1940 movie (the one with Lawrence Olivier). Compare and contrast seems to be the way to go with book adaptions - you can just pick all the best parts from the different versions… :D

Treating myself1

Went to the trade fair Muba with Sandra and just had to buy this - it was a great price, and it’s real silk. Just something very special, so that the black evening gown I bought in Canada in 1999 isn’t my only outfit for special occasions anymore.

This drained my cash, as I definitely hadn’t counted on buying a dress - that was probably good, since otherwise I’d probably have bought lots of other pretty knickknacks from the different international stalls. Many thanks to Fränzi for the free tickets! :)

Sorry for the mess

I’m currently attempting to upgrade to WordPress 2.01, so please excuse any ugliness that might occur. The whole thing will lead up to my move to a new domain (part of my downsizing project), so just bear with me…

Edited: It seems to have worked just fine - happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! :)
