Unconscious Mutterings1

Feeling a bit under the weather - just listless and a bit achy in strange places. Not in the mood to be productive and write for uni, so I’m playing the association game

  1. Diminishing:: feelings
  2. Fed up:: with it
  3. 3:00 AM:: too damn early!
  4. Interfere:: with me
  5. Often:: not enough
  6. Hay:: fever
  7. Prediction:: comes true
  8. Homophobia:: abdomination
  9. Booty call:: not my thing
  10. Enunciate:: I must admit, I had to look that up in the dictionary…

Bored and stuff

Sitting at the STI - my very last day and I’m basically done with no intention of starting something new for the couple of hours before the meeting about the internship paper, etc.

So I’m just dawdling about, feeling bored and kinda restless. I think all the decisions and discussions about the future, both with Sandra and Michelle and with employees at the STI, have unsettled me somewhat. It’s all coming together, but still very vague and uncertain, which doesn’t sit too well with me and my inner balance.

My day and related ramblings

The internship still rules my life. I missed having a weekend and am feeling a bit under the weather. But it’s only a couple more days, so I won’t die of the boredom and repetiveness of what I have to do…

Today after work I met up with Sibylle. We wanted to watch the first ep of the last season of ‘Sex & the City’ (which Sibylle loves) on German TV. But Sibylle isn’t feeling well (like almost everyone else, it seems - must be autumn…), so we just had something to drink, chatted and then went and bought me some new shoes. They’re so elegant (for everday shoes) that they hardly seem like mine… *g*

Now I’m back home, which suits me just fine, as I cherish my free hours these days. Had the first season box of ER in the mail, so I’m currently enjoying the pilot. Wow, I used to watch this show religiously for years - pretty much until Mark’s death. I discovered that new episodes are shown in English on the French channel on Thursday, so I’ve kind of gotten back into the habit. But my heart will always be with the first seasons (the new ones are just a bit too crazy for my taste), so I’m quite happy right now. :)

Just quickly

Quite tired and not in the mood to be online much. But I just want to wish Déborah (a lovely girl from Brazil that I met via this here blog) a very happy 18th birthday! Hope you have a great day, sweetie! (That’s what you get for adding your birthday to my list… *g*)

Edited to add: Aww, someone sent me the best song I’ve ever heard about one of my favorite things of the world - Chocolate by Getaway People. This random (and anonymous) act of kindness just made my day. <3

My mind is consumed

That internship at the STI has taken over my life. I spend my day there and then go home and recuperate until the whole thing starts again…

The good news is that it’s only two weeks, because apparently I only need three weeks, not four, for my major, and both Sandra and I already did one week when helping out at an Epidemiology workshop two years ago. Also, they don’t seem to expect too much of us - I can leave early on the two days that I have to work in the evening, and no one checks how many hours we make.

The not-so-great news is that, although at first it looked as if my job (each one of us does something completely different, all stuff that they don’t normally have time for) would be really easy, it’s turned out quite demanding. They have me translating the website of the German Medical Anthropology work group, from German to English.

At first that was quite good although tiring, because you know me and my love for all things English - but then they liked it so much that they told me to do the whole site. Which includes a great number of scientific abstracts of conference lectures and stuff - the absolute horror! Those things are difficult enough already in German, and translating them really takes a lot out of me. Managed about half of them today, so it’s at least another full day - and I have no idea how happy they’ll be with the results.

Oh well, I’m home now. Need to get off the computer - no energy for nothing and very tired eyes and sore shoulders. I think I hear my TV calling… :)

Remembering 2001

I guess we’re all remembering today what happened three years ago. 9/11 really changed the world, didn’t it? I feel like it’s our generation’s equivalent of when JFK got shot - everyone I know knows exactly where they were when they heard about it. I was one of the last people to know, probably - we were camping at Fishriver Canyon in Namibia, without power, and didn’t hear about it until Sept 12, when we fuelled up. The guy there had a tiny radio which he held to his ear while serving us - he told us about it, but with much exaggeration (luckily ther weren’t 200′000 dead), so that we rode on to Swakopmund (where we finally got details) shell-shocked and halfway convinced that WW III was bound to start…

Anyway, good thoughts and prayers to everyone who lost someone or was otherwise affected. Sadly, Beslan has just shown us again that human beings do the most frightful things to each other - and I hope I will never be able to truly understand how anyone can do something like this to someone else.

Unrelated - my 21 days of horror (not a single day off!) start today. Pity me! :)

Uni timetable

Finally Media Studies has published its classes for the next semester, so I sat down and put together my timetable.

This could be either a pretty interesting or a dead boring semester, depending completely on how the classes will be taught. And I’d much prefer not to have so many classes in the afternoon and hardly any in the morning. Oh well, no different from any other year… I’ve been studying for eight semesters so far, and there’s always been reason to complain. *g*

Monday
10-12: Social Change - Cultural Anthropology

Tuesday
14-16: Psychological approaches - Cultural Anthropology
16-18: Criminal studies - Cultural Anthropology

Wednesday
14-16: Brecht and America - German Lit
16-18: Reading and Writing - Medias

Thursday
12-14: Literary theory - German Lit
14-16: Postmodern knowledge - Medias

Friday
10-12: Prague - German Lit
13-15: Nerd Culture - Medias

Well, that’s what I’ve decided on for the moment - I still can change my mind, since the semester doesn’t start until the middle of October. But I don’t think I will. Except the class that will be preparation for an 8-10 days excursion to Prague. I love Prague - it’s high up on my list of beautiful cities - but I’m just not sure whether I’ll want to spend such a long time with complete strangers. But the temptation is definitely strong. :)

Off for the weekend

A cousin is getting married, so I’ll be in Germany over the weekend, together with my mom and dad. I’ll also use the opportunity for a short visit with Märrie, because it’s on the way. I’ll spend the night from Sunday to Monday with her and then rejoin my parents when they come down on Monday evening.

Sure it’ll be a lot of fun - a good weekend to all of you!
