Fall fair in Basel

For the last two weeks there have been rides and food and craft stalls all over the city. It’s an annual happening, the biggest fair in the region, and everyone goes, even if it’s just to the Petersplatz (the oldest market, right in front of the university) to buy some of the yummy specialties.

When I was younger, we always went on rides, spending a lot of money that way — but these days it’s more about walking around taking everything in. And food, of course. *g*

Last night I met up with Sandra and we first went up to the Münsterplatz (cathedral square), where we took our traditional ride on the huge ferris wheel. It’s the biggest transportable one in Europe, so I can forgive it for being horribly cheesy — the view is simply awesome. Specially during the day, but at night as well.

During the fair the Rhine ferries run until late at night. I love taking the ferry, it’s one of my favorite things to do in Basel. This is the sign of the cathedral ferry – a lantern like the ones they make for Fasnacht (our carnival):

This has nothing to do with the fair. It’s one of my favorite alleys, leading down from university to the market square – you can see the tip of the red sandstone townhall through the fog.
